Or Chaim Goes Chasidish

For the first time ever yesterday, in the midst of the Or Chaim year, we had in our school a famous Rebbe; the Kaliver Rebber. The Rebbe joined us for an inspirational davening, perhaps even the quietest one of the year, and afterwards, gave majority of the students brachas and lessons. The Rebbe would grab us by the cheek, pull as hard as he can, while slapping the other cheek (all in good fun), and would tell us things about our past, present, and future. Personally, the Rebbe was dead on when he told me things about my past and how I can improve my future. He ended off my "palm reading" with a reasonable request (for a rabbi), that I should fluently memorize 6 ½ daphim of gemara before I attend Yeshivat Torat Shraga next year.

Knights and Raptors Clean House

It was a day of absolute triumph as the Or Chaim Varsity Knights and the Toronto Raptors came out victorious yesterday at the ACC.
Josh Sturm and his Knights rode past the Char Cougars with ease, tearing them apart in a game which seemed hopelessly lopsided. At the end of the 1st quarter the Knights held the Cougars to a mere 2 points; 6 at the half. CHAR Cougar Ben Halberstadt exploded for the last 16 minutes however, breaking through the Knights 1st half unbreakable defence. However this explosion was no where near enough to beat the red hot Knights.
Later in the evening, the Raptors beat previous Raptors Jarret Jack and Marco Bellenelli, and their Hornets 96-90.
The day was a success!

3rd Annual Or Chaim ACC Day

Or Chaim is once again going to the Air Canada Centre for a day of rivalry, fun, and kosher hot dogs. The Varsity Knights Basketball Team will be playing the Varsity CHAR team on the court that the Toronto Raptors themselves play on. Rumour has it famous announcer Ryan 'RayJay' Jenah and his partner in crime Ezra Schwartz will be commentating at the game.
Knight manager Yoni Grunbaum arranged this day, fundraising to pay for the successful tournament the Knights attended in Memphis, Tennessee.
Coach Blackwood and his team hope to end their season on a good note, beating our religious rivals, CHAR!

Or Chaim's First Ever Mother/Son Learning Set for Tonight

It has never happened before, and quite honestly, in my personal opinion, it will never happen again (I hope Or Chaim proves me wrong). Mothers of Or Chaim bochrim will be attending a mishmar tonight where them and there sons will eat an upgraded dinner and afterwards, learn a shtikel torah.
As this theoretically seems like a lovely idea, its not. Men and women should not be learning together, it is as simple as that… especially when she is your mom. Mothers and sons have a special connection because they don't do things like sit down and learn a daf of Gemara. It is the mother that prepares you for a day at school, while it is the father who reviews your day at school. On top of that mothers will not appreciate the stench of an all boys school who centralize themselves with basketball as a mandatory daily activity. Mothers will not appreciate the smell one inhales when passing by the mens bathroom, which by the way is conveniently located right across from the mens change room, yippee!
So Or Chaim, The Knightly Knews is calling of you sons who are attending this event tonight and is inviting you to comment on your experiences; the good, the bad, and the especially… the ugly!

Ski Day Gigantic Success!

Blue Mountain:
After a long five years without an Or Chaim ski day, students hit the slopes in just over 5 degree weather. The day was perfect; clear skies, beautiful view of Blue Mountain's village and its surroundings, and good times with your friends.
Getting off the bus, students were hit with freezing rain, resulting in the frowns turned upside down, turned upside down again. We shlepped our bags to the locker and rental room where we got our equipment faster then ever and immediately hit the great white mountains in northern Ontario. We had three and a bit hours to ski before most went to lunch. Lunch was perhaps one of the major highlights of the day. Students who ordered, received sandwiches from Bites Gourmet. The sandwiches were to die for; chicken, turkey, caramelized onions - what else can one ask for. The day continued with another good 2 hours of skiing and then a nice smelly bus ride home.
All in all ski day was a blast and will hopefully be continued in Or Chaim's years to come!

First Ski-Day in 5 Years Expected to be the Best Ever!

There was no doubt in anyones minds that President Sam Meyer and his team of seniors would accomplish the supposedly ??unaccomplishable??. It's been five years since Or Chaim's last ski-day, an event which no student in the school today was present for.
This ski-day is expected to be one of the best ever, as the weather is supposed to be perfect, the crowds to a minimum, and the food outstanding (Bites Gourmet Sandwiches the official sandwich of The Knightly Knews).
Student Council has asked that we remind you of a few safety rules.
1. Where a helmet and goggles while you ride the slopes.
2. Put the saftey bar down while on the ski lift.
3. Don't ski with Ben Berger.

We Hope those all help you!

Frankel's Back in Action as they Make there Epic Jump Over the Border

It's official! The Frnakel's now hold the key to every Canadian dream, a visa. As of Wednesday, February 16/2011 Matanya and Rachel Frankel are officially back, teaching (this time legally) at Or Chaim. After a 4  month break, the Frankel's have resumed their regular teaching positions, offering a classic Or Chaim education, the best type.
The Knightly Knews would like to offer a quick 4 step guide on how to obtain your Canadian visa:
Step 1: Wait four or five months before attempting to do anything. Try sitting in your apartment and creating a useless facebook page (just kidding, it has a good song on its wall).
Step 2: After your extended vacation, take a quick drive up to the Ontario/Buffalo border.
Step 3: Hop over the border line.
Step 4: Hop back over the border line.

Congratulations you are now a Canadian certified worker!
Wasn't too hard was it?

Or Chaim Spreads its Seniors into Kitchener

After almost two years of planning, Rabbi Alonim and his "Pilot Class" finally went on their shabbaton. The senior class along with the Witty and Alonim family went up to Kitchener, Ontario and spent the Shabbos with one of Canada's oldest Jewish communities. The community of Jews has decreased in numbers for more then thirty years. What was once a booming Jewish neighbourhood, home to many of our students parents, is now a community with a shul that literally struggles to make a minyan on Shabbos. We were welcomed into the shul with open arms, provided with a place to sleep, food to eat, and souls to inspire. And that is exactly what we did, inspire the uninspired. The seniors demonstrated tremendous achdut when they created one of the most meaningful Shabbos' that the Jewish community of Kitchener has seen in the last three decades.
Zvi Zobin, along with his committee of helpers, arranged this entire Shabbaton to its last detail. With the aid of Rabbi Alonim, Rabbi Witty, and his fellow classmates, Zvi managed to make something from almost nothing. Zvi has inspired Or Chaim to make this a tradition and perhaps expand it to not only the senior class, but a Shabbos for every grade.
Seniors literally did not want to get on the bus home as they were enthralled with the amount of energy that was produced over Shabbos. Facebook statuses lit up minutes after the departure explaining in such simple yet meaningful words what a great time they had in Kitchener.
All in all this shabbaton was a huge success and will hopefully become a custom to Or Chaim and its senior class.
The Alonim are leaving after this year. Being a senior myself, I would like to thank the entire Alonim Family for being with us every step of the way. You were there when we first came in to Or Chaim, and you'll be there when we accept our diplomas.
Leshana Haba Ba Bayt Shel Mishpachat Alonim (next year in the house of the Alonim's)

Bnei Akiva Schools Thrives at YU's Model United Nations

In YU's 21st model united nations, Bnei Akiva Schools came home with five awards, the most of any school at the conference. Lead by chaperone Mrs. Nicky Kagan, and captain Arielle Wasserman, the team of eleven men and women, represented our school and city. Or Chaim president Sam Meyer was awarded the "Honourable Mention Award" in his human rights committee. Grade twelve senior Paul Slodovnick followed in his footsteps and exemplified his abundance of knowledge and world class opinions. Yaakov Green, Ben Felsher, and Ulpana junior Rebecca Mandlebaum all showed tremendous potential in there rookie years at YUNMUN. All of them were awarded "Honourable Mentions". The rest of the esteemed delegates all worked hard, fought for there countries, and came just short of awards themselves. The school represented the USA and the UAE, two world leaders, and two very hard countries to represent.
The Knightly Knews commends all of the delegates from Bnei Akiva Schools in there efforts, and thanks them for representing us in such an unbelievable way.

Bnei Akiva School's Shlichim On Facebook?

That's right, you heard correctly. The Shlichim at Or Chaim and Ulpana are officially on Facebook.
With his time off, Rabbi Frankel has clearly been busy, promoting Toronto Shlichut to the world. Their profile page tells it all.
- Born May 14th, 1948.
- Speak three languages Hebrew, Aramaic, and Yiddush, and for some reason they put English down as well, but I don't know about that one.
So friend request the Shlichim…..why not?
